Nashville Holistic Veterinary Care

A note from #theholisticvet about Diarrhea …

Do you have something around to treat your pets for diarrhea ? The common traditional veterinary treatment for this condition involves antibiotics – something we should re think as a profession (in my opinion). It’s a good idea to have some slippery elm around or another natural remedy since early intervention is key for a case of diarrhea to be successfully treated at home.

Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) but what really matters is it is a natural remedy diarrhea / colon issues in the dog and cat. It’s one of the few herbal supplements that is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It’s a mucilagenous herb that absorbs water in the colon, absorbs toxins, protect against gastric acidity, relaxes and soothes the endodermal lining of the gut and it can actually soothe / protect inflamed tissues in the GI tract. Most of the slippery elm available is  from wild populations slippery elm bark in Appalachia. Fortunately, Doctor Harveys’ and The Honest Kitchen make it easy for us to dose our pets with their products 1. Runs Be Done (Dr. Harvey’s) and 2. Perfect form Herbal Digestive supplement (sold at Mutts and Meows locally!) Both of these products are fabulous and contain other ingredients that also help soothe the gut, feed the good bacteria in the gut and ease discomfort during stomach upset.

-Always have one of these in your home –
